Introduction

In some areas of the world where the grid is unstable or the grid is weak, people always suffer from unexpected blackout or irregular load shedding, which brings people many inconveniences. In order to tackle the problem, many people use diesel generator as the back-up power source when the outage occurs. However, the generator electricity generation has its own disadvantages, such as higher diesel cost, a lot of noises, not environmental friendly so on and so forth. Therefore, on the basis of the generator, PV plus batteries are adopted as a complementing power sources together with the generator for back-up use. The combined solution of PV + batteries + generator + grid, on one hand, not only makes the power supply diversified and reliable but also makes the cost of electricity generation lower, on the other hand, it can benefit the environment more.

Besides, there are some areas where there is no grid. People use the generator to supply power to the loads. In this case, if add the batteries to the generator system, it will make the power supply more flexible and stable.

GoodWe ES G2 + Diesel Generator Solution

In view of this application, Goodwe developed and researched a function into the hybrid inverter of ES G2, providing the compatibility with the diesel generator which is applicable to both scenarios with grid or without grid. The following is the detailed description of GoodWe solution: PV + batteries + generator + grid and PV + batteries + generator.

Wiring schematic and APP configuration

a)Wiring schematic

PV + batteries + generator + grid

b) Wiring schematic

PV + batteries + generator

From the schematic a), we can see, in the system, there will be installed an ATS which is used for the switching between the Grid and the generator. And in both the inverter and the generator, there is a programmable relay each which can control the on and off of the generator.

When the grid disconnects, ATS will switch to the generator after the start condition of the generator is met. The generator will supply power to both the on-grid and back-up loads. If there is excess power, the excess power can charge the battery. If the stop condition of the generator is triggered, the system will turn to off-grid operation or switch to the Grid according to the set parameters in the APP.

In the schematic b), there is no grid, there are PV, Batteries and generator only. No ATS and no meter are needed in this system. The generator is connected to the on-grid port.

APP configuration

How to configure the generator in the Goodwe SolarGo APP, here are the steps about the configuration:

1. Click the “more”, select the “Generator control” to access the generator installation page. If users choose the “not installed”, the generator will not be combined into the system, so there will be no relative parameters to set in the APP. If we choose “installed”, the generator will be available in the system which will appear in the energy flow gram shown on the Home Page. Also, some parameters need to be set under the installed selection.

2. After selecting the “installed”, there are also two setting options under the installed selection. One is the “Manual”, the other is the “Auto”.

a)When select the “Manual”, there is a “Switch” under the “Manual” mode. If the “Switch” is turned on, when the Grid disconnects or there is no grid itself, the generator will start. If the “Switch” is turned off, when there is a blackout or without gird, the generator will not work, and the loads will be powered by PV + batteries.

Additionally, on this page, no matter what mode will be chosen, the rated power of the generator should be set, the value of which should be 1.5 times larger than the total power of the loads which will be powered by the generator during the time the Grid disconnects.

And for other parameters, such as the running time, upper voltage, lower voltage etc., they will be set as default before the inverters are delivered.

b) When select the “Auto” mode, there are additional three parameters to set. Respectively, they are the maximum charging power (generator charging the battery), the turn-on SOC and the close SOC. The following are the details of the working logic.

 i.  When the Grid disconnects or is not available, and if the battery SOC is higher than the set turn-on SOC, the generator will not start. As long as when the battery SOC is lower than the set turn-on SOC, the generator will start automatically;

ii. When the Grid disconnects or is not available, and the battery SOC is lower than the set turn-on SOC, the generator will start automatically. Once the battery SOC reaches or higher than the set close SOC, the generator will close automatically.

iii. With respect to the “prohibited time”, it is designed for users when they do not want to use the generator for some reasons, for example, to avoid the noises at nights.
